Deacon Alemayehu at National Conference
Deacon Gabriel Alemayehu, a Hellenic College senior, recently attended The Young Preacher's Festival in Louisville, Kentucky. He is a native of Ethiopia and came to the United States at a young age and settled in Seattle, Washington. He is a deacon in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
This academic year he is a Fellow of The Fund for Theological Education, an organization that supports the theological education of undergraduate and graduate students across the United States. The FTE sponsored his attendance at the festival. Deacon Gabriel presented a lecture entitled "Got Rest? Finding True and Complete Rest in the Lord." All presentations at the Festival were prepared as sermons and delivered as lectures to the other attendees.
Talking about his experience of attending The Young Preacher's Festival, the Deacon said: "At the festival no two presenters were alike. St. Ephraim the Syrian writes '(God) has fashioned His word with many beautiful forms, so that each one who studies it may consider what he likes.' Having the opportunity to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ in different and beautiful forms was a blessing. I am glad I had the chance to participate in this wonderful ecumenical event."
Deacon Gabriel plans on continuing his theological studies in graduate school. The Acacemy of Preachers, one of the sponsors of the Festival, wants to include his presentation in a book of sermons from the conference.
