Head of Church of Greece in Boston to Receive Honorary Degree


Hellenic College Holy Cross will confer an Honorary Doctorate Degree to His Beatitude Archbishop Ieronymos II of Athens and All Greece on Saturday, May 18.

On Thursday, May 17, His Beatitude will officiate at Vespers in the School’s Chapel of Holy Cross. That evening, the Theological School will host a dinner in his honor.

The Archbishop is an accomplished academic who has lead the way with charitable and humanitarian efforts in troubled economic times in Greece, especially through Apostoli, the social service agency of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Athens.

According to the New York Times, there are 191 soup kitchens run by the Greek Orthodox Church in Athens alone. As of January 2012, 1,700 families numbering approximately 7,000 people were receiving monthly food aid packages.
