HCHC Welcomes New Academic Year
With Name Day Festivities

Saturday, September 13, 2014, Hellenic College Holy Cross held the first annual Convocation to innaugurate the new academic year and begin the celebration of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America, president of the HCHC Board of Trustees, presided over the weekend's events. Rev. Dr. Eugen J. Pentiuc offered a keynote address entitled "Let the Bridegroom Speak to You." The Convocation was followed by vespers for the name day feast, when incoming second-year seminarians receive their crosses and senior seminarians receive their exorasso.

Along with His Eminence, President Nicholas C. Triantafilou, students, faculty, and the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees gathered for a procession from the library to the Maliotis Cultural Center. First-year students from both Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology led the procession.

The St. Romanos the Melodist Byzantine Choir performed the Apolytikion of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, conducted by Dr. Grammenos Karanos, Assistant Professor of Byzantine Music. President Triantafilou introduced Fr. Pentiuc, who was recently appointed Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.

Fr. Pentiuc spoke affably from his deep scholarship of the Bible and also from his own experiences as an immigrant coming to America, "When we read the Scripture, God, more precisely the Bridegroom—our Lord Jesus Christ, speaks to us. This is the way our Bridegroom wants to enter into dialogue with us. So, our duty is to read the Scripture silently, carefully, and prayerfully, trying to discern the Lord’s voice in its sweet, sometimes tough to digest, inspired words."

Hierarchical Vespers for the Exaltation of the Holy Cross were held in the Holy Cross Chapel to an audience which overflowed out the doors. His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios was assisted by Archdiocesan Chancellor Bishop Andonios, President Triantafilou, and faculty and alumni clergy.

The Rassophoria, the blessing given by the Archbishop to the senior seminarians to wear the Exorasson, has traditionally been connected to “the commission to preach the Word of God.” The Stavrophoria, the blessing by the Archbishop to wear the school cross, serves as a visible reminder to seminarians to daily take up their cross and serve Christ.

His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios also presided over a beautiful Divine Liturgy on Sunday, September 14, to complete the celebration of the feast day.
