Orthodox-Catholic Theological Consultation Meets
Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology was well represented at the eighty-fourth meeting of the North American Orthodox-Catholic Theological Consultation that took place at Saint Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in Crestwood, New York, from June 4 to 6, 2013. The members of the Consultation continued their study of the “Role of Laity’ in the two churches.
The meeting was co-chaired by Fr. Thomas FitzGerald, the Consultation’s executive secretary, and Professor of Church History and Historical Theology at Holy Cross. Adjunct Prof. Despina Prassas delivered a paper on “Lay Reception of Church Teachings.” Fr. Nicholas Apostola, chair of the Field Education Committee, led the meeting of the Orthodox caucus.
The Consultation, founded in 1965, is the oldest continuous ecumenical dialogue. It is sponsored by the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops. The Consultation has produced twenty-six Joint Statements which address issues related to Orthodox and Catholic reconciliation.
