College Year in Athens

College Year in Athens has accepted Hellenic College senior Christopher Zaferes of California and junior Christian Siskos of New York for its study abroad program that is focused on the history and civilization of Greece and the East Mediterranean. Its mission is to offer each student an academically rigorous program of studies combined with the vibrant experience of day to day contact with the people, monuments and landscape of Greece.

 

Kallinikeion Funding Renewed

Dr. Stamatia Dova, Associate Professor of Classics and Modern Greek Studies and Director of the Kallinikeion Institute at Hellenic College, has announced that the Kallinikeion Foundation will fund the Institute once again in the Summer of 2011, its tenth consecutive year. This is an intensive, full-immersion modern Greek language program for Hellenic College and Holy Cross full-time students. There have been 222 graduates of the program since its inception.

 

National Philoptochos Society Donations

The Ladies National Philoptochos Society has donated $23,000 to HCHC for the purchase of a walk in freezer urgently needed in the school's kitchen. This is in addition to $60,000 given by the Society this year that was used to carpet all the rooms in the Polemanakos Dormitory. The Society has given HCHC $716,000 since 2003 for capital improvements, in addition to over one million dollars for scholarships. We continue to be blessed by such an amzing organization that always responds to the needs of our students.

 

Dr. Katos Lecture

Dr. Demetrios Katos, Associate Professor of Religious Studies and Interim Dean of Hellenic College, recently was invited to the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Demetrios in Elmhurst, Illinois, to present a lecture as part of the parish's DEMETRIA 2010, the celebration in honor of their patron saint, the Holy Great Martyr Demetrios the Myrrhstreaming. His lecture was entitled "Transformational Encounter", in which he dealt with how Orthodox Christians don't merely attend the Divine Liturgy, they celebrate it. He discussed how to perform that task each week with commitment and understanding as well as how to discover how it affects one's salvation and how everything is transformed in God's presence.

 

Kontoglou Icon Exhibit Extended

The Fotis Kontoglou icon exhibit presently on display in the Reading Room of the HCHC Library has been extended through Saturday, November 6, from 10am to 5pm. We hope that the availability of the exhibit on a Saturday will allow visitors who might not be able to come on a weekday to come and view the icons.
