HCHC Alumni Association Reunion Events

Commencement Week at Hellenic College and Holy Cross brings to campus each year alumni celebrating 25 and 50 years since graduation as well as other alumni who visit to renew old friendships and support their alma mater. This year the HCHC Alumni Association will honor the 1961 graduating class of Holy Cross and the 1986 graduating classes of Hellenic College and Holy Cross. Festivities begin on Wednesday, May 18 with an all day Alumni Board of Directors meeting followed by Great Vespers in Holy Cross Chapel with the Holy Cross classes of 1986 and 1961 celebrating.

 

OVM Servant Leadership Workshop

The Office of Vocation and Ministry at Hellenic College recently organized a servant-leadership workshop for student leaders attending Hellenic College and other colleges and universities in the greater Boston area. The guest presenter was Mr. Tim Tassopoulos, Senior Vice President of Operations for Chick-fil-A and a member of the Board of Trustees of Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. He facilitated students' learning about the practices of great leaders.

 

Student Receives Prestigious Grant

Deacon Gabreil Alemayehu, a senior at Hellenic College and a deacon in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, recently was notified that he was accepted for a summer internship program at the tenth Lilly Summer Discernment Institute, held at the School of Theology at Sewanee, The University of the South. He was one of only twelve students from across the United States accepted into the program. The first week is at Sewanee to prepare him for his internship. The next six weeks will be spent working in the field doing research and the final week is again at Sewanee for reflection and sharing of the internship experience.

Deacon Gabreil will work with Ethiopian youths who are members of street gangs.

 

Dr. Michopoulos Keynote Speaker

Dr. Aristotle Michopoulos, Professor and Chairman of the Greek Studies Department was the keynote speaker at the Battle of Crete Symposium sponsored by the Pan-Cretan Association, which took place at the Maliotis Cultural Center on the campus of Hellenic College and Holy Cross. Dr. Michopoulos touched on all the significant points in this major event of the Second World War during his address, especially how the Batle of Crete caused Nazi Germany to delay the start of Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia, to such an extent that the invasion failed. Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of England at the time, remarked that after the Battle of Crete it must be said not that the Greeks fought like heroes, but that in the future it would be said that heroes fight like Greeks. Dr.

 

Marian Simion Publishes Book

Marian Simion, PhD (ABD) Adjunct Instructor in Interdisciplinary Studies at Hellenic College, and Assistant Director of the Boston Theological Institute, has authored a book which is forthcoming through the University of Montreal and the American Romanian Academy of Arts and Sciences. It is titled Religion and Political Conflict: From Dialectics to Cross-Domain Charting. He will use the book in a course he will teach in the fall at Hellenic College, Religions and Political Violence. The Preface to the book is by Patriarch Bartholomew. The significance of this book is best described by Dr. Marc Gopin of George Mason University, an authority in the field. "Marian Simion has created a masterful analysis of religion and conflict that breaks ground on two levels.

 

President's Award to Dr. Macrakis

Hellenic College Interim Dean Dr. Demetrios Katos, Holy Cross Dean Rev. Dr. Thomas FitzGerald, Archbishop Demetrios, Dr. Lily Macrakis, HCHC President Rev. Nicholas Triantafilou.

Dr. Lily Macrakis was honored with the President's Award at a gathering attended by one hundred and fifty guests, including Archbihsop Demetrios, HCHC President Rev. Nicholas Triantafilou, Trustees and Deans and faculties of Hellenic College and Holy Cross. Dr. Macrakis was accompanied by her son, two daughters and a grand-daughter. Also attending were faculty from other arera colleges and universities, including several former colleagues from Regis College where Dr.

 

Awards Program

Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology recently held the annual Awards Program. Each year the recipients of numerous scholarships are announced at an evening convocation of students, faculty and staff. This year students from the two schools received a total of 176 scholarships of varying sizes.

 

Hellenic College and Holy Cross Commencement

The 69th Commencement of Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology will take place on Saturday, May 21st, 2011. An Hierarchical Divine Liturgy will begin the day at 7:30 AM in Holy Cross Chapel followed by Commencement in The Pappas Auditorium. Hellenic College will have fifteen graduates and Holy Cross will graduate forty three. This year's honorary degree recipient will be Dr. Christos Yannaras, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Cultural Diplomacy at The Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences in Athens.

 

Cantonis Lecture
