As part of Hellenic College Holy Cross School of Theology’s ongoing 75th anniversary celebrations, the campus hosted the 38th Annual Byzantine Studies Conference (BSC) from November 1-4, 2012. This was the largest event to take place among the various celebratory anniversary festivities. The hosting of the conference was made possible by the generous support of the Mary Jaharis Center for Byzantine Art and Culture, based at the School, The Michael G. and Anastasia Cantonis Chair of Byzantine Studies, The Tousimis Fund and Hellenic College Holy Cross.
Hellenic College Holy Cross Professor of Byzantine Chant Dr. Grammenos Karanos will be participating in this year’s Mostly Orthros Festival on Saturday, December 8, 2012 from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. The festival, presented by the Axion Estin Foundation, consists of a conference during the day and a concert in the evening.
The international conference will take place at the James Chapel of the Union Theological Seminary, 3041 Broadway at 121st Street, New York, New York, 10027. It will include a keynote address entitled “The All-Night Vigil at the Tomb of Jesus in Early Christian Jerusalem, and its Musical Legacy East and West” by Dr. Peter Jeffery, Michael P.
As part of Alumni Homecoming Weekend 2012, Dr. Philip Mamalakis moderated HCHC's first-ever live-streaming panel discussion, entitiled The Vital Ministry of the Laity: The Royal Priesthood of all Believers. The panel was comprised of five lay members of the alumni community, including Gerontissa Foteini, a nun from All Saints Monastery in New York; Elena Khoury, a contract and immigration attorney; Chris Kourlos, a business consultant; Dr. George D. Stavros, Director of the Danielson Institute; and Catherine Varkas, a long-time educator.

Clinical psychologist Dr. John T. Chirban, a long time faculty member of Hellenic College and chair of the Human Development Program, has recently published How to Talk with Your Kids About Sex: Help Your Children Develop a Positive, Healthy Attitude Toward Sex and Relationships with Thomas Nelson, Inc. The book seeks to fill a critical void in helping parents and other caregivers address this crucial area of a child's physical, emotional, and spiritual development. A parent of three teens himself, Dr.
Holy Cross had the blessing to host an Inter-Seminary Senior Retreat September 28-29, 2012. The senior class of Holy Cross, St Vladimir’s, St Tikhon’s and Holy Trinity Seminary joined for fellowship, prayer and to hear the address of Father Irenaeus Steenberg. Father Irenaeus is an Archimandrite in the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad currently living in San Francisco, CA. He is the principal of St John of San Francisco Orthodox Academy, the Dean and Founder of the Sts Cyril & Athanasius Institute for Orthodox Studies and a Visiting Professor at Santa Clara University. Fr Irenaeus received his Masters and Doctorate from the University of Oxford and has published dozens of books, book contributions and articles in Church History and Patristics.
