Kahtleen Ryan joins the Hellenic Faculty with a wide range of experience in the fields of English, Literacy, and Language Arts. Ms. Ryan began her teaching career as an English teacher at Matignon High School in Cambridge, MA. After five years at Matignon, Ms. Ryan moved on to teach literacy to adults, many of whom had dropped out of school during the tumultuous days of the Boston Busing Crisis, in South Boston's D-Street Projects and at the South Boston Neighborhood House. After her tenure in South Boston, Ms. Ryan moved on to the Franciscan Children's Hospital in Brighton, MA, where she taught special needs children from 1986-96. For the following eight years, she served as the Literacy Specialist at the Bennett-Hemenway Elementary School in Natick, MA.
Ms. Ryan's focus in her doctoral program centered on Children's Literature and the study of strategies to enhance the educational experiences of emerging readers. Ms. Ryan has presented her work at conferences throughout the state. Her presentations focus on identifying and implementing strategies to help students realize their full potential as readers and writers. Her work at Hellenic College is shaped by her belief in the transformative power of teaching and learning. She is committed to empowering the Elementary Education students of Hellenic College as they strive to become exemplary teachers of the future. The classes she teaches include Children's Literature, Philosophy of Education and Methods of Teaching Language Arts.
