“The Semester of Faith program is not about the typical college experience. It’s almost like a study abroad…you’re out of your normal element, but it’s always a fantastic time. To just be in this spiritual environment – it makes your soul feel better.”
Hear Christina, a neurobehavioral science major at Washington College in Maryland, explain how her Semester of Faith experience at Hellenic College has been filled with great friendships, challenging courses, personal and spiritual growth.
WHAT IS SEMESTER OF FAITH?
Semester of Faith offers students an opportunity for short term, collegiate level study at Hellenic College, the oldest and largest accredited Orthodox Christian institution of higher education in North America. Students take college level courses that enrich their spiritual lives and help them complete their Bachelor’s degree, while living in an Orthodox Christian community, at whose center is Christ.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE COURSES I CAN TAKE?
We offer courses in the areas of bible, Orthodox Christian history and theology, and religious studies, all of which are taught from an Orthodox Christian perspective. Just think how exciting it would be to take courses like Biblical Heritage, the Great Christian Thinkers, or World Religions with Orthodox professors! Courses such as these are taught at most schools and required at many. Other, more specialized courses, such as Introduction to Orthodoxy, Religions and Political Violence, or Byzantine History, could be transferred back to your school as elective credit, depending on your program and major. To view these courses and others click the link here for the Hellenic College Course Catalog.
CAN I TAKE NON-RELIGIOUS COURSES AS WELL?
Yes! Most four-year colleges require a two-year liberal arts curriculum. Hellenic College is no exception and offers courses in various liberal arts such as the classics, fine arts and music, literature, history and the natural and social sciences. We also offer courses in elementary education and management and leadership. Your Semester of Faith allows you to register for various courses that could fulfill core or elective requirements at many colleges and universities.
WHY IS IT CALLED SEMESTER OF FAITH?
Semester of Faith is not just about learning facts, it is an immersion experience akin to a semester abroad. The program offers students an opportunity to study and live their faith in an Orthodox Christian community. Living on campus, you will have the opportunity to strengthen your faith as you prepare for your future career by worshipping in chapel, participating in student activities, attending courses, listening to guest speakers, and attending spiritual retreats.
WILL MY CREDITS AT HELLENIC COLLEGE TRANSFER BACK TO MY HOME INSTITUTION?
Most colleges and universities have transient enrollment policies that help you determine which courses from other schools will transfer back to your own. Hellenic College is a fully accredited, four-year liberal arts college and most credits, depending on your major, should transfer back to your home institution without issue. Check with your own advisor, registrar, or Student Services Office before enrolling at Hellenic College to maximize the transfer credits you earn.
