Assistant Director & Instructional Designer

Hellenic College Holy Cross (HCHC) is the center of higher education founded by, associated with, and supported by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. The undergraduate college offers various programs and courses leading to a bachelors degree, and the graduate school offers three programs leading to a masters degree. Job Summary:

Works under the direction of, and provides leadership assistance to the Director of Continuing Education and eLearning in overseeing various eLearning initiatives, acts as the Learning Management System (LMS) administrator, course designer and curriculum developer. The incumbent provides direct support to faculty and institutional administrators in the design and development of web-enhanced, hybrid and fully online courses and degrees, the use of the learning management and instructional technology systems, and the application of sound pedagogical and instructional design principles. CANVAS is the application and environment of choice to deliver on-line instruction for use with distamce, hybrid and face-to-face courses.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design course curriculums for online continuing education and professional development

  • Coordinate and implement both strategic and tactical plans involving faculty development and training; course development; curriculum design; instructional technology. Support faculty in the integration of emerging technolgies to facilitate engaging teaching practices and student learning experiences

  • Project manage the implementation and administration of the LMS, eLearning and continuing education

  • Primary in-house LMS trainer

  • Configure, administer, maintain, update and document the LMS environment and supervise its security, performance and fault-tolerance

  • Maintain an awareness of current and future trends in the field and monitor technological developments in distance learning for technological means to achieve educational or outreach goals

  • Develop and facilitate professional development opportunities in the theory and methods of hybrid online learning and instruction

  • Assist in the design, organization, facilitation and assessment of professional development for faculty use of a LMS and other distance education technologies

  • Ensures college wide awareness of, and compliance with, federal and state distance learning regulations, as well as licensing and copyright laws

  • Assists in monitoring the review of online courses for standards, consistency, and quality

  • Assists the LMS Company in the administration, operation and management of the LMS

  • Participates in the development and administration of applicable policies, strategic plans, goals and programmatic activities pertaining to online and hybrid learning at the College

  • Establish policies, processes and procedures related to maintenance, update, upgrade, integration and development of eLearning and the LMS application and environment

  • Maintain current knowledge of distance education trends, innovations, research and best practices by participating in local trade association meetings

  • Work with the Director to provide leadership to staff, and supervision of the eLearning Department’s operations and services

  • Work closely with HCHC’s Office of Information Technology

  • Performs other site position responsibilities or other project management duties as assigned 

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Instructional Design, Distance Learning, or Instructional Technology and 5-7+ years of relevant experience

  • Proven project management experience in the development and administration of online learning, learning management software, instructional design or continuing education

  • Demonstrated experience in the theory and practice of distance learning pedagogy and experience in curriculum development, instructional methods and online instruction

  • Excellent analytic, writing and evaluation skills

  • Experience and familiarity with Jenzabar EX a plus

  • Proven design and development experience, and delivering online courses

  • Strong experience and operation knowledge with LMS technology. Direct experience with CANVAS LMS preferred

  • Experience in curriculum development and LMS course design, administration, training, and user support

  • Certified Quality Matters preferred

  • Competent, knowledeable and experienced with appropriate hardware and software used in the creation of digital media including but not limited to MS Office Suite plus Project and Visio, Adobe Captivate, Photoshop, web page authoring and social media platforms. AV experience a plus

  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to multitask under strict deadlines

  • Excellent interpersonal skills (written and verbal) with the ability to work both independently and part of a team of faculty, staff, and administrators
