“I invite students to get into the messiness of learning,” said Alice McIntyre, professor and chairwoman of the Elementary Education Program at Hellenic College. “In my classroom, I educate my students to facilitate a teaching environment where children can be enthusiastic about learning. I look for the ‘Aha!’ moment on my students faces.”

This is the philosophy that guides Dr. McIntyre and the Elementary Education program at the college.

The Mary Jaharis Center for Byzantine Art and Culture at Hellenic College Holy Cross will host a lecture on “Imperial Self-presentation and the Byzantine Oikoumene.”  Ioli Kalavrezou brings focus on the arts of the empire of Byzantium with a special interest on such topics as ivory and steatite carving, the private icon, imperial art, manuscript illumination, and the use of symbols and relics in the hands of the empire.  The lecture will be held on Thursday, December 1, 2011 at 4:00 p.m.

BROOKLINE, Mass. – Dr. Paschalis Kitromilides, professor of political science at the University of Athens, presented a lecture on October 18 at Hellenic College Holy Cross School of Theology on “The Greek Presence in Post Byzantine Asia Minor and its Academic Study.”

The lecture surveyed the history of Hellenism in Asia Minor from the battle of Manzikert in 1071 to the start of the early 20^th century, and highlighted ways in which the Greek Orthodox communities managed to survive.

The Missions Institute of Orthodox Christianity and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology are sponsoring a missions conference on “Orthodox Theological Schools and Their Role in the Global Missionary Movement.”

Metropolitan John (Pelushi) of Korca, Albania, will offer the keynote address on “Orthodox Missions and the Resurrection of the Church of Albania” at 7 p.m. Thursday, November 17.

The conference continues on Friday, November 18, from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Dr. Rev. Michael Oleksa, the former Dean of St. Herman’s Seminary, noted author and a priest serving native Alaskan villages for the past 40 years, will open the day speaking on “St. Vladimir Seminary Graduates in Missions.” Fr. Hellenic College Holy Cross, the oldest and largest Christian Orthodox institution for higher learning in North America, will begin celebrating its 75 years of service to the Church and society. Activities will begin on October 16; with an inaugural dinner cruise on the Boston Harbor. Several additional events are being planned to mark the 75th over the next two years, recognizing the hierarchs, theologians, professors, students, administrators, alumni, donors and all those who have contributed to what is the most important academic institution for the Greek Orthodox Church in America.
