Maria Kouroumali

Dr. Maria Kouroumali joined the Faculty of Hellenic College in January 2010 as the Director of the Mary Jaharis Center for Byzantine Art and Culture and Assistant Professor of Byzantine Studies. She completed her undergraduate education at the Department of Classical Philology, National and Kapodistrion University of Athens, and her postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford. Before arriving at HC/HC, she was a postdoctoral Research Fellow in Humanities at Wolfson College, Oxford, and a member of the Classics and History Faculties in Oxford. She has taught at Oxford, Royal Holloway University London and at the University of Cyprus as a visiting lecturer for one semester. Her research field is Late Antique and Byzantine Studies, particularly political, military and cultural history and literature. Her doctoral research focused on Procopius of Caesarea, the main historical source for the reign of the Emperor Justinian (AD 527 - 565) and his account of Justinian's campaigns against the Ostrogoths in sixth century Italy. She is currently revising her thesis for publication with Cambridge University Press.
