A Presentation in Honor of Oxi Day by George Horton Biographer Ismini Lamb

On October 26, 2023, the New York Life Center and the Maliotis Cultural Center co-hosted a talk by Ismini Lamb, Associate Teaching Professor and Director of the Modern Greek Studies Program at Georgetown University. Lamb’s presentation, delivered in the MCC Auditorium, was entitled “Life Lessons from George Horton Relevant to Oxi Day.” The speaker called on the audience to emulate the dedication to truth and justice exemplified by Horton, an American diplomat who sought to shed light on the plight of Greeks and other Christians in the wake of the burning of Smyrna in September 1922. The talk, which was attended by members of the HCHC faculty and student body, was followed by a lively Q & A.

A Reading by Dr. Therese Sellers from Ilias Venezis’ Land of Aeolia

On October 26, 2021, members of the HCHC community gathered at the Maliotis Cultural Center to hear Dr. Therese Sellers read from her translation of Ilias Venezis’ Αιολική Γη, or Land of Aeolia (Denise Harvey Publisher, 2020). Dr. Sellers provided a biographical sketch of Venezis and spoke about the context of the Nazi occupation of Greece in which Venezis wrote the lyrical memoir of his childhood. Dr. Sellers’ inspired reading of passages from the book captivated the audience and was followed by a lively question-and-answer session with active student involvement. The event was sponsored by the New York Life Center for the Study of Hellenism in Pontus and Asia Minor and organized in collaboration with the Hellenic College Classics and Greek Studies Programs.
