Hellenic College Senior Recognized

March 03, 2011

Deacon Gabreil T. Alemayehu, a senior at Hellenic College. has been recognized as an outstanding preacher and is featured in the March issue of "iPreach", the newsletter of the Academy of Preachers. He received this honor because of a sermon he gave at the Academy of Preachers Festival 2011. As a result of his achievement he has been appointed one of three new members of the 2011 Young Preachers Leadership Team. Deacon Gabreil is a deacon in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and plans to continue his theological studies after graduation from Hellenic College this Spring. Panayotis League Master Classes

March 03, 2011

Panayotis League, Instructor of Modern Greek Studies and Music at Hellenic College, will be in Tarpon Springs, Florida, from March 5-7 to give a series of master classes and lectures on traditonal Greek percussion and violin music as well as demonstrations of traditional Apokries (Carnival) music from the Greek islands. The program is sponsored by the City of Tarpon Springs.

He will be a featured artist at Harvard University on March 25. and at the New England Conservatory on March 28, presenting Greek Phanariot songs of Constantinople.  Mr. League was recently featured in a special concert at Boston University, "Devotional songs of the Ottoman Jews", directed by Dr. Edwin Seroussi of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

 

President's Award

Father Nicholas Triantafilou, President of Hellenic College and Holy Cross has announced that Dr. Lily Macrakis, former Dean of Hellenic College, will receive the President's Award at a dinner tomorrow evening, March 1, at the Cathedral Center in Brookline , MA. The dinner was originally scheduled for February 3 but was postponed due to inclement weather. She is receiving this honor in recognition of her long service to Hellenic College as Dean for eight years, most of them pro bono. She continues to offer her services to the college in the position of special counselor to the President.  Dr. Macrakis received her PhD in history from Harvard University and taught for many years at Regis College, where she chaired the history department, before coming to Hellenic College.

 

Symposium on Faith and Science

February 23, 2011

The 6th Annual St. Photios the Great Faith and Learning Symposium, sponsored by the Office of Vocation and Ministry at Hellenic College, will take place this Saturday, February 26, 2011, in the Reading Room of the Library on the college campus in Brookline, MA. This year the theme is "Faith and Science." This event annually brings together Orthodox Christian college students from nearby schools to join in fellowship and exploring the relationship of their faith with various aspects of society.

 

Hellenic College Students in California

February 17, 2011

A contingent of Hellenic College and Holy Cross students is in Ontario, California, attending the Metropolis of San Francisco Folk Dance Festival. They will remain there through the weekend to meet festival participants and other interested people and speak to them about the educational opportunities at Hellenic College and Holy Cross.

 

Deacon Alemayehu at National Conference

January 31, 2011

Deacon Gabriel Alemayehu, a Hellenic College senior, recently attended The Young Preacher's Festival in Louisville, Kentucky. He is a native of Ethiopia and came to the United States at a young age and settled in Seattle, Washington. He is a deacon in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

This academic year he is a Fellow of The Fund for Theological Education, an organization that supports the theological education of undergraduate and graduate students across the United States. The FTE sponsored his attendance at the festival.

 

Dr. Michael Kisembo in National Study

January 24, 2011

Dr. Michael Kisembo, Adjunct Assistant Professor in Management at Hellenic College, participated in a national project conducted by the Educational Policy Improvement Center that was designed to evaluate the Common Core Standards, which have been recently adopted by over thirty states. Participants rated the importance of the standards for student success in their courses and provided additional information helpful in determining the content and challenge level of their courses in relation to the standards.

 

Marian Simion Involved in Many Areas

January 24, 2011

Marian Simion, Adjunct Instructor of Interdisciplinary Studies at Hellenic College, will be teaching a course entitled "War and Peacemaking in Orthodox Christianity" this semester. He is the Assistant Director of The Boston Theological Institute (a consortium of eight departments or schools of theology in colleges and universities in the Boston area), a field education supervisor at Harvard Divinity School and also teaches Peace Studies at the Boston College Department of Theology.

 

HCHC Students in Oklahoma City

January 14, 2011

The Hellenic College Holy Cross Ambassador Basketball Team is in Oklahoma City this weekend, from January 14 to January 17, to participate in the Metropolis of Denver GOYA Basketball Tournament. The team will play an exhibition game against the coaches.

 

Panayiotis League in Tarpon Springs

January 10, 2011

Panayiotis League, Instructor of Modern Greek Studies and Music at Hellenic College, is in Tarpon Springs through January 12, giving a series of lectures on traditional Greek music, in conjunction with the annual Epiphany celebrations. He was invited by the City of Tarpon Springs and the Florida Folklife Association.
