Newly published volume by His Grace Bishop Joachim (Cotsonis) of Amissos, Saint Nicholas National Shrine at the World Trade Center: The Iconographic Program

The prestigious publishing house, Scala Arts Publishers, Inc. (London/New York), in association with Saint Nicholas National Shrine at the World Trade Center, has announced the newly published volume by His Grace Bishop Joachim (Cotsonis) of Amissos, Saint Nicholas National Shrine at the World Trade Center: The Iconographic Program. Just over 300 pages, this luxurious volume, rich with stunning photography, is a comprehensive overview of the history and construction of the Shrine accompanied by a detailed analysis of all images of the iconographic program found in the sanctuary, nave, and narthex, as well as for the images appearing on the liturgical furnishings. The study examines the images in their architectural, liturgical and art-historical contexts, including those images with the topographical and site-specific references to the tragic events of 9/11 and the subsequent rebirth of the Shrine as a sacred space of worship and as a memorial site of hope and resurrection. Each iconographic discussion is thoroughly researched and provided with extensive scholarly notation. The photographs are superb, a number of which provide details illustrating the site-specific iconography. Bishop Joachim, who is also a Byzantine art-historian, created the iconographic program that was brought into reality by the celebrated iconographer, Fr. Loukas of the Sacred Monastery of Xenophontos on Mouth Athos. The volume also includes an architectural summary by Santiago Calatrava, the internationally renowned architect of the Saint Nicholas Shrine. The publisher’s announcement can be found at:
