Catherine Holder Wins Academic Prize
Catherine Holder, a Hellenic College senior from Centennial, Colorado, has been named the winner of the Hellenic College Humanities Paper Prize. The prize is awarded annually by the faculty of the Literature and History program. Catherine won the award for her outstanding work in two areas within the field of humanities, scholarship and creative writing, having written both a paper and a collection of poetry. HCHC Board Honors Past President Dr. Thomas Lelon
Dr. Thomas C. Lelon, HCHC President from 1976-1986 and longtime Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees, was honored at an elegant dinner in Dowd Hall on September 11. His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios, Interim President, presided over the dinner, which was attended by members of the Lelon family and of the current Board. His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros Pays Extended Visit to HCHC
His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America visited HCHC for the second time in less than three weeks, having blessed our community with his presence at Synaxis and Convocation on August 26. This visit extended from September 10 to 14 and allowed His Eminence, who stayed on campus, to participate in many aspects of the life of the school, which he heads as Chairman of the Board. His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America visited Hellenic College Holy Cross for the first time as Archbishop on Monday, August 26. From the moment of his enthronement, His Eminence has made clear his love and support for the school, so it was especially meaningful that he honored us with his presence at the very beginning of the academic year. HCHC Mourns the Passing of Metropolitan Panteleimon
The entire HCHC community has been deeply saddened to learn that His Eminence Metropolitan Panteleimon (Rodopoulos) of Tyroloi and Serention fell asleep in the Lord on August 7. He was 90 years old and reposed at the Patriarchal and Stavropegial Monastery of Vlatades in Thessaloniki, of which he was the abbot for many years. From 1963 to 1966, he served as Dean of our school. July 24, 2019 In a letter to the interim President, His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios, the Board of Trustees, Faculty and Administration of Hellenic College Holy Cross, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America announced the completion of the appointment of the search committee for a new president of the School. Fr. Cotsonis Lectures at Dumbarton Oaks
On July 12, 2019, the V. Rev. Archimandrite Joachim Cotsonis, PhD, presented a lecture on the iconography of Byzantine lead seals for the graduate students enrolled in the 2019 Byzantine Coins and Seals Summer Program at Harvard University's Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection in Washington, DC. Fr. Joachim is Director of HCHC's Archbishop Iakovos Library and Learning Resource Center and an internationally recognized authority on the iconography of lead seals, of which the Dumbarton Oaks 17,000-specimen collection is the largest and most comprehensive in the world. 27th Annual Golf Classic a Great Success
The 27th annual Hellenic College Holy Cross Nicholas J. Bouras Memorial Golf Classic is always a much-anticipated highlight of the summer and this year's event was no exception. Players from as far away as Georgia gathered at the lovely Kernwood Country Club in Salem, Massachusetts on July 15 for a full day of golf on the championship course designed by the great Donald Ross. Dr. Mamalakis in Moscow for Russian Book Launch
Dr. Philip Mamalakis, Assistant Professor of Pastoral Care at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, recently completed a whirlwind visit to Moscow centered on the Russian publication of his latest work, Parenting Toward the Kingdom. “I wrote this book principally for the Church in the United States,“ he says, “so I am overwhelmed by the strong positive reception my work has received internationally.” The Greek translation of Parenting Toward the Kingdom debuted just last fall.
